Lord Rama is the 7th incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Shri Ram had taken birth on earth to put an end to the forces of evil of the age. Ram was born as the first son of King Dashratha and Queen Kaushlya. Ram had three brothers, Bharat, who was born from the second wife Kaikeyi, and Laxman and Shatrughana born from the third wife Sumitra.
Lord Rama took birth to free the earth from the cruelty and sins of the demon King Ravan. Ravan had practiced austerities in order to propitiate Shiva and Brahma, who had granted him immunity from being killed by Gods. One of the Gods had to take on a human form in order to be able to defeat Ravan.
